This example along with another that is exactly the same was picked up from a worker at the factory and you will note that this example and the other example both have the face on the eagle ground down. Perhaps the employee "sabotaged" the badges and ground the faces so that they would not pass quality controls and thereby render them useless and disposable. LW0528. Luftwaffe Radio Operator-Air Gunner's Badge by Deumer, Named and Dated/Unit Marked. Great looking early tombac-based example named on the reverse to the original owner and also the date with a "36" and some other text that is possibly a unit marking. At one point, likely during the era, the catch was re-done and the pin flattened at the end to better fit into the catch. Many badges bear maker marks, such as the "A" and "L/64" of Assmann or the unmarked but identifiable work of Gustav Brehmer and FLL. These marks help authenticate a piece and trace its origin. Some manufacturers, like Arno Wallpach, used distinctive construction methods, such as cast-in reverse fittings, which can be a telltale sign of authenticity.
Collecting Luftwaffe Badges
When collecting Luftwaffe badges, condition is paramount, but rarity and provenance also play significant roles. Original badges with their cases, packets, or documentation command premium prices. Look for honest wear that indicates actual use, as opposed to artificially aged reproductions.
Be wary of fakes, which have flooded the market since the 1960s. Key indicators of originality include correct hinge and catch assemblies, proper maker marks, and period-appropriate materials. Buying from reputable dealers or obtaining pieces directly from veterans or their families, as with some of the saboteur ground assault badges above (LW0383 and LW0384), adds confidence.
